Percentage by Mass Calculator

Find what share of a mixture, solution or product is made of one component, measured by weight.

Quick answerMass percent = component mass ÷ total mass × 100. 25 g of salt in 200 g of mixture is 12.5% salt by mass.

What is mass percent?

Percentage by mass describes how much of a mixture’s weight comes from one ingredient. Chemists use it for solutions, cooks use it for recipes and manufacturers use it for alloys, fertiliser and feed blends.

Mass percent formula

mass percent = component mass ÷ total mass × 100

Rearranged: component mass = total mass × percent ÷ 100 and total mass = component mass ÷ (percent ÷ 100).

Step-by-step example

You dissolve 25 g of salt to make 200 g of salt water in total.

StepCalculationResult
1. Divide component by total25 ÷ 2000.125
2. Convert to percent0.125 × 10012.5%

Salt makes up 12.5% of the mixture by mass.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by the mass of the solvent instead of the total mass of the mixture.
  • Mixing units, for example grams for the component and kilograms for the total.
  • Confusing mass percent with volume percent, which is a different measure.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your values. Find what share of a mixture, solution or product is made of one component, measured by weight.
  2. Check units and assumptions. Make sure the inputs use the same scale and that any optional settings match your situation.
  3. Calculate and review. Compare the output with the formula below and note any limitations stated on the page.

Formula and calculation method

Use the relevant percentage relationship shown on this page. For a change between two values, compare the difference with the correct reference value; for reverse calculations, rearrange the equation to solve for the missing starting value.

Worked example

For example, if a price changes from $60 to $80, the difference is $20. Dividing $20 by the starting value of $60 and multiplying by 100 gives a 33.33% increase. Always use the original value as the denominator for percentage increase.

Search and practical tips

People commonly search for a percentage by mass calculator – mass percent, how to calculate the result step by step, which formula to use, and how to check the answer manually. Use the formula above as a transparent starting point, and consult the relevant institution, agency, or qualified professional when an official rule or personal circumstances affect the result.

Frequently asked questions

What is percentage by mass?

It is the mass of one component divided by the total mass of the mixture, multiplied by 100. It is also called mass percent or weight percent.

What is the formula for mass percent?

Mass percent = (mass of component ÷ total mass) × 100. Both masses must be in the same unit.

Does the unit matter?

Not for the percentage, as long as both masses use the same unit. The unit setting only labels the masses in the results.

How do I find the mass of a component from a percentage?

Multiply the total mass by the percentage as a decimal. 12.5% of 200 g is 0.125 × 200 = 25 g.

Can the percentages add up to more than 100%?

For a complete mixture the components add up to exactly 100%. In composition mode the tool calculates each share from the masses you enter, so they always total 100%.
